El Niño is in effect. Mold follows water.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center says a strong El Niño is likely through early 2027. If storms bring leaks or floodwater, the clock starts right away: the EPA says drying within 24 to 48 hours usually prevents mold. Our free timeline guide shows what to do, hour by hour and day by day.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a mold test?
Often not. The California Department of Public Health says that if you can see or smell mold or moisture, you don't need to measure it or identify the type; testing doesn't give more useful information. What matters is finding and fixing the moisture source and removing the mold.
Is there a mold license in California?
No. CDPH says California has no legal requirement for licensing or certifying mold assessors or remediators, though some hold national certifications (such as IICRC, NORMI or NAMRI). Construction work, such as replacing drywall, still requires a CSLB-licensed contractor above the legal threshold.
Can I clean mold myself?
The EPA says a homeowner can usually handle an area smaller than about 10 square feet if the moisture problem is fixed. For larger areas, mold from contaminated floodwater or sewage, or mold in HVAC systems, get professional help.
Is black mold more dangerous?
CDPH says any mold you can see or smell is a health risk and should be fixed, and there's currently no evidence the particular kind matters.
Do you do the remediation?
No. We're a free referral service that connects you with independent local providers who do the work and set their own prices.
